Description
Mermaid - Reimagined illustration - from a photograph
Mermaids have thousands of specialized, enlarged "breathing" pores on their skin. Some of these special pores absorb oxygen from the water, while others eliminate CO2 from their system. The pores are in unique patterns and are used to identify individuals - much like finger prints in land-based humans.
Each Mermaid possesses a colony of specialized flat worms which exist in a symbiotic relationship with their Mermaid host. By ingesting contaminants, the flatworms keep the Mermaid's breathing pores clean and functioning properly.
DNA evident strongly suggests that Mermaids are a subspecies of Homo sapiens (modern human beings) who diverged from a common ancestor approximately 300,000 years ago.
