Artist's Description

The Edwin H. Gott is one of 13 1,000-foot vessels sailing the Great Lakes. It was the eighth supercarrier to enter service during a 10-year building program from 1971 to 1981. She is the most powerful ship on the Great Lakes, generating 19,500 hp with two diesel engines. She has a self-unloading boom on deck that can be extended to shore to discharge cargo at a rate of 10,000 tons per hour.
This ship was named for the President of the United States Steel company. She entered service in February of 1979, making her one of the few ships to make her maiden voyage in the middle of the winter when ice conditions would normally have halted shipping on the lakes. The original photo upon which this digitally reimagined image is based was taken in February, 2015 at the Milwaukee Municipal Mooring Base near the Nidera Grain Elevator.
