The Cawker Estate Building was designed by Crane & Barkhausen Architects and constructed in 1895. For many years it was leased to Landauer Company, a wholesaler of dry goods and notions. The firm that was established in 1869. They made their fortune in the 1870's and went out of business in 1928. In 1994 the building was acquired by the Milwaukee Institute for Art and Design (MIAD) and was completely renovated. The upper floors housed the dormitory for MIAD students and the first and second floors became the William F. Eisner Museum of Advertising & Design. The building was sold and renovations on the property began in the summer of 2013. The building now houses the Chicago Street Lofts.
